Abstract

The influence of globalization has gradually begun to shift the joints of native culture in Indonesia. "Tradition" and "modernity" live face to face even though they are opposites. This phenomenon causes local culture to slowly fade if not evaluated immediately. This research is seen from a cultural studies approach using qualitative research methods, recognizing and valuing the variety of voices within a culture, which makes multivocality essential to cultural studies. Research must be reflexive and can challenge to relinquish power or accept the legitimacy of alternative viewpoints and knowledge systems. Thus, multivocality is emphasized as a diversity of perspectives, and a rejection of a single truth or dominant narrative. This study finds strategies that can be used to realize the preservation of local culture, namely the macapat tradition through: education, tourism, government policy, collaboration, publication and promotion.
