Abstract

Research on the variety of Korean spoken language that has been carried out so far generally examines the use of Korean by native speakers, while this research focuses on the use of Korean by foreigners, in this case, the tourism workers in Bali. Therefore, it is very interesting to see the phenomenon of variations in the use of Korean. This study aims to find out more about the variety of speech styles used by tourism workers in Bali and the dynamics of their use in the sub-domain of tourism, such as in markets, in coffee factories, in restaurants, in watersports, in hotels, in massage/spa venues, and tours and travel. Data is in the form of recorded speeches from tourism workers when interacting with Korean tourists. The results of this study found four variations of the Korean speech styles used by tourism workers in Bali, namely the formal style, the polite style, the intimate style and the plain style. Additionally, it was found that there were dynamics in the use of the Korean language by tourism workers who had a longer duration of the interaction. Apart from that, there was also a shift in the use of types of speech, namely a transition from a variety of formal speech style to the polite one, a transition from a variety of polite style to a variety of intimate style, and a mixture of types of speech style
